How can we help?
Basics
What is b.even?
b.even (symbol BEVN) is a currency with no owner. Every verified person receives the same share each month, and coins that pile up in one place flow back to everyone through the whale brake.
It runs as a smart contract on the Celo network. There will never be more than 21 million BEVN.
Why is it called b.even?
Say it out loud: be even. The symbol is BEVN.
Is b.even an investment?
No. b.even promises no gain and no yield. It is a currency designed to be fair, and its price can fall to zero. Nothing on this site is financial advice.
Who owns or runs b.even?
No one. The contract has no owner, no admin key, no pause button, no blacklist and no upgrade path. No exchange, company or foundation owns it or holds coins for you.
The only owner of a coin is the person whose wallet holds it.
Which blockchain does it use?
Celo, a proof-of-stake network with no mining. A transfer costs less than a tenth of a cent. Your monthly check-in is sent by a relayer, who pays the network fee and keeps 1% of your share.
How many coins will exist?
At most 21,000,000 BEVN, the same cap as Bitcoin.
- 2 million are created at launch: 1 million for the auction and 1 million for the pool.
- The other 19 million are shared out to people, month by month.
- Each person gets 0.5 BEVN a month. With more than about 380,000 people, 1% of what is left is shared each month instead, so half of what remains goes out about every 5.8 years.
- Half of all swap fees is burned, and burned coins never come back. The number of coins in existence can only fall below 21 million.
How is it different from Bitcoin?
- New bitcoin goes to miners. New BEVN goes to every person, equally.
- Bitcoin has no limit on concentration. b.even brakes holdings above 16× the average.
- Lost bitcoin is lost forever. Lost BEVN goes to an heir or back to everyone.
- Bitcoin needs mining. b.even runs on a proof-of-stake network.
Joining and privacy
How do I join?
Hold your passport, or a European ID card with a chip, against your phone. The app reads the chip and creates a zero-knowledge proof that you are a unique adult and which country issued the document. It takes about a minute.
What personal data do you get?
Almost none. The contract receives a person identifier and the issuing country. Your name, document number and photo stay on your phone. There is no selfie.
Why a passport?
Because the share is per person, someone has to make sure one person can’t pretend to be a thousand. Passport chips are signed by the countries that issue them, which makes fake people expensive. The identity check is done by the Self protocol.
Why do I have to show my passport again?
To keep each share tied to one living person. The app asks every 4 months in your first year, then once a year. It may ask sooner if your account looks unusual, for example more than 10 large incoming transfers in a month (everyday payments don't count, and a shop isn't asked again for 3 months after showing its document), and 5% of accounts are picked at random each month.
If you don’t answer, you stop earning until you do. Your balance is never frozen.
Is there a limit per country?
Yes, so that no state can take over by issuing documents. A country can have at most 10,000 people or 15% of everyone, whichever is larger. When a country is full, new registrations from it wait until the total grows.
I don’t have a chipped passport or ID card. Can I join?
Not yet, and we know that leaves out many of the people a basic income would help most. The identity provider can be replaced through a vote of people, for example by one that accepts more documents.
Your monthly share
How much do I receive each month?
0.5 BEVN a month, the same for everyone, with no halving: someone who joins in year ten gets what the first people got. With more than about 380,000 people, the monthly budget, 1% of the coins not yet issued, is split equally instead, so each share is smaller.
On top of that, you get an equal slice of the pot, any donations made to the people of your country and, if you lock coins, part of the lock rewards.
What makes it worth something is money coming in: buyers, donors and apps. Our model says each person’s income is about 1.45 times what comes in per person each month.
How do I collect it?
Just open the app, as you would your bank’s, and unlock it with your fingerprint or Face ID. That confirms it’s still you and collects your share for the month. Once a month is enough. A relayer sends it for you, pays the network fee and keeps 1% of your share.
The share is paid once the month has closed.
What if I don’t open the app for a while?
You don’t receive a share for a month in which you didn’t open the app. After 6 months without opening it, the account stops earning until you come back. Your coins stay yours.
Can I mine BEVN with my phone?
Not in the Bitcoin sense, and you don’t need to. Apple and Google don’t allow mining on phones, and a phone would always lose to industrial machines. In b.even, opening the app each month takes the place of mining: it proves you’re a real person and collects your share.
You can earn a little more by relaying. Anyone can submit other people’s check-ins to the network and receives 1% of each share they deliver. Your proof is tied to your wallet, so a relayer can’t take anything else. Locking coins also earns part of the revenue.
Why are my new coins locked?
By default, each new share goes into a 3-month lock that earns lock rewards. You can switch this off at any time in the app.
What is the equal pot?
Each month, 70% of what the whale brake collects and of what apps pay, 20% of swap fees, plus donations, late-loan penalties and coins from abandoned accounts, is split equally among everyone who opened the app that month.
Whale brake
What is the whale brake?
A yearly charge on very large holdings, in brackets like income tax. It is measured against the average balance per person, which the contract works out on its own:
- Up to 16× the average: free.
- The part from 16× to 48×: 5% a year.
- The part above 48×: 40% a year.
None of it is burned: 70% goes back to everyone equally and 30% to people who lock coins.
Will I pay the whale brake?
Almost certainly not. You would need more than 16 times the average balance before paying anything.
Can a whale avoid it by splitting coins across wallets?
No. A wallet with no verified person behind it pays 40% a year on everything, which is never less than the brake it would avoid. Splitting among real people means giving the coins to them.
Why won’t BEVN be on big exchanges?
An exchange wallet holds coins for thousands of people, so it would pay the 40% brake. You buy and sell through the app and the contract’s own pool, and your coins stay in your own wallet.
Revenue, locks and loans
Where do rewards come from?
From real revenue, never from printing extra coins. Revenue comes from a 0.15% fee on every swap, the whale brake, fees apps pay to check that a user is human, and donations.
- Swap fees: 50% is burned, 20% goes to the equal pot, 30% to people who lock coins.
- Whale brake and app fees: nothing is burned, 70% goes to the equal pot, 30% to people who lock coins.
- Donations: all of it goes to people, either to everyone or to the people of one country.
How does locking work?
Lock coins for 1 to 6 months to earn part of the revenue. A 6-month lock counts twice as much as a 1-month lock. What you’ve borrowed against your lock doesn’t count.
How do loans work?
Anyone can lend BEVN to the common loan pool and take back what isn’t lent out at any time. If you have coins locked, you can borrow up to 30% of them, at most 0.4% a month. The loan is due when your lock ends.
What if a borrower doesn’t pay back?
One month after the due date, anyone can settle the loan from the borrower’s lock, and a 10% penalty goes to the pot. A debt can never grow past the coins locked behind it, so lenders are covered even if no borrower pays.
How do apps pay into b.even?
An app that wants to know a user is a real, unique person pays 3 CELO per check. That money buys BEVN from the pool, and 70% of it goes to the equal pot for everyone.
Heirs and recovery
Can I name an heir?
Yes, in the app, and you can change it at any time. The heir must be a verified person. After 12 months without a sign of life from you, an inheritance can be opened with 3 months’ notice. Opening the app during that time cancels it. After the notice, the heir receives your balance and your lock.
What happens to coins with no heir?
After 3 years without a sign of life, the balance goes to the equal pot and is shared among everyone. No coin stays stuck forever.
What if I lose my phone?
Your account uses a passkey synced to your Apple or Google account. If you lose that too, you can recover your identity with your passport and move it to a new wallet.
Buying, price and wallet
Can I buy BEVN now?
No. BEVN is not on sale. The project goes through a testnet and a closed pilot first.
How will the launch work?
- Months 1 and 2: people join and collect their shares. Nothing is sold.
- Month 3: an auction sells 1,000,000 BEVN for CELO at one price for everyone, at most 29,000 CELO per person.
- The auction money and another 1,000,000 BEVN go into a pool that no one can ever withdraw.
Where does the price come from?
From the contract’s own pool, which pairs BEVN with CELO. The site converts that to US dollars and euros at the market rate. The contract itself uses no price oracle.
How do I check how much a wallet has?
Paste the address into the wallet check on the home page, or open the app. You’ll see the balance, what is locked or borrowed, what it receives this month and whether the whale brake applies. Reading is free and needs no sign-in. It goes live with the testnet.
Who holds my coins?
You do. Coins sit in your own wallet, not with an exchange or a custodian, and no one can freeze them.
Safety and risks
Has the contract been audited?
Not yet. It has 101 automated tests, 5 invariants checked with fuzzing, simulations of attacks on the real contract, and a model of 4,000 market futures, many of them bad. Mainnet waits for two independent audits and a public bug bounty.
What was it tested against?
A whale buying half the pool, a state faking thousands of people, everyone selling at once, and half of the lockers borrowing the maximum. In every test, the supply cap held, every loan stayed covered and nothing got stuck. Even if no borrower ever repays, the contract guarantees that every loan is covered by its lock.
The price is another matter: after 2 years it was at or above the auction price in 80% of the 4,000 futures, and in the worst 10% it was at 96% of it or less.
What if there’s a bug?
It can’t be patched, because no one has an admin key. People would have to migrate to a fixed contract. That is the price of having no owner.
Can the rules change?
Only one thing can: the identity provider, if it fails or is compromised. Anyone can propose a replacement. The vote lasts 2 months and needs 30% of people to vote and a two-thirds majority. Then there is a 3-month wait, and 6 months to move over.
What are the main risks?
- There is no guaranteed value. The price can fall to zero.
- At launch it relies on one identity provider, Self.
- People without a chipped document are left out.
- A state could still bring up to 15% of people from one country once the network is large.
- A bug can’t be patched, only migrated away from.
How do I avoid scams?
BEVN is not on sale, and our channels open with the testnet. Until then, any account or site selling BEVN or using the b.even name isn’t us. No one from b.even will ever ask for your passkey or recovery details.
Giving and taking part
How do donations work?
Charities, governments, companies or towns send CELO to the contract. It buys BEVN and the whole gift goes to people: either to everyone, through the equal pot, or only to the people of one country who use b.even that month. There’s no admin cost, and every step is public.
If nobody from that country uses it that month, the gift goes to everyone instead, so nothing gets stuck.
Can I join the pilot?
The closed pilot, with 100 to 300 people for 2 to 3 months, opens after the testnet. It will be announced on our channels when they open.
When do the apps come out?
The iPhone, Android and web apps arrive with the testnet and the pilot.
